Very nice! But I think a nice deer like that would have merited a REAL beer, say Colt .45 or Olde English 800...I guess that's malt liquor huh? Oh well, a good buck none the less

well i got him at about 9:30 the morning of the last sunday of rifle season with the 'ol trusty .30-30. i actually had him come out while i was sitting in a blind, but i couldn't get repositioned to get a shot. i had been in the blind since about 6 waiting for daylight. by the time there was aenough light to see i tried a couple of grunt and bleat sequences. finally the sun was up enough to offer shooting light to those like me who shoot iron sights and not a thing was moving, not even squirrels. i sat there and listened for about a half an hour and didn't hear anything, so i started calling about every 20 or so minutes. by about 7:15 i hadn't seen or heard anything until there was a twig snap. i sat still for a couple of minutes listening and still couldn't see anything. finally after a couple of minutes i heard leaves rustling, and the sound was coming from right behing me, but i still couldn't see anything. finally after about 15 minutes of anticipation and my thumb at the ready to cock the hammer back, the biggest dang red squirrel in all of gasconade county and ran headlong into the side of the blind. after a good chuckle, i looked around and still wasn't seeing anything and decided to do one last calling sequence. i called sparsely for about 10 minutes using mostly estrous bleats and then put grunt tube away. after about 30 minutes or so, i heard so movement to right the right of me, but couldn't see anything, i figured it was squirrelzilla again. i watched and listened, but still couldn't see anything. finally what seemed like an hour later i happened to look to my right and i saw what looked to be deer legs in the edge of the hay field. sure enough i saw them move and instntly thought it was a big doe. being that i had already taken a fat doe on friday morning and i didn't want to waste my buck tag on another before muzzleloader season. so i waited and watched, and after five minutes or so he moved to within 45 yards of me and i happened to see horn. he kept working my way along the edge of the field and saw a lot more horn! now he was within 30 yards in the open and i had no way of opening my flap to get my gun out of it. i tried to think of a way to get out of my chair and turn to face him being that i was in a outhouse blind, but i just didn't think i cuold get it done, so i waited and of course he walked within 25 yards broadside of me and then turned and walked down over a rise in the field and i couldn't see him. i tried to call to him, but he didn't pay any attention to it and he dissappeared into the finger of woods at the bottom of the knoll. i waited about 40 minutes of so and finally decided to get out go look in the direction he had went. luckily he wasn't still inthe field. so i walked down the terraces to the bottom edge of the woods started glassing the hillside behind their pond and  thought that i saw tan and white moving in the woods.

by now the wind had picked up quite a bit and it was almost impposible to hear anything but leaves rustling in the breeze, but it was coming from the direction i thought i had seen tan and white. so i snuck into the woods and put the wind my face as i eased towards the back of the pond. i finally found a spot on a knoll where 5 draws ran together at the back of the pond. two if the draws were so narrow and thick it wasn't likely to be used by deer and they also helped funnel my scent out and behind me and the low spot at the back of the pond. i sat for about 10 minutes and started calling. after the 3rd sequence it probably wasn't 5 minutes when i heard something crashing through the woods in front of me. all of a sudden he jumped out of the wood, ran across the back of the pond and jumped the fence and stopped in the low spot directly below me about 40 yards away. i manage to hit him, but i wasn't the best shot i've ever made on a deer. so i sat still and didn't make a noise, as i watched him i could see his tail flickering back and forth and his hindquarters start to get wobbly. he ran about 5 yards and he stumbled, got back up and fell down again. he laid there about 5 minutes and then got up and stood there. he walked behind some brush and after that i lost sight of him. after 15 minutes or so i called rachael's dad and told him i had a deer down and that i might need help tracking him. he showed up about 20 mintes later and the search began. i found blood and hoof prints where i had shot him. i followed his tracks and found some more blood, but quickly found out he didn't go the direction i had last seen him, but instead he had went back across the fence and towards the pond. i found a couple of more drops of blood and started looking round the pond bank and saw a large brown clump that looked like a tree laying in the cattails. i didn't think it was him, but curiosity got the better of me and i went over to look for myself and sure enough there he lay. he was almost all of the way in the water and i had to wade in ankle deep to get him out. i hit him in the liver which was not what i had intended, but i believe buck fever was a big culprit in that. at least he died fairly quickly and he didn't run off and hide to where i wasn't able to find him. he had 9 points over an inch long or longer and would have developed a drop tine in a couple of years. he must have broke of off his browtines fighting, but he is the first and best buck i've ever taken and i am very pround of him and don't care a bit about how big he is or if he'll even score over 110" he is still a trophy in my eyes.
