After a positive scouting report, my cousin and I got up early yesterday and set up in a field that held 2,000 geese on friday...but we could not get any to land. It was, as always, a lot of work to carry the gear out and it was a bit tougher this time as it was plenty muddy.

We borrowed a quad runner to make things go qucker, not to mention saving wear and tear on us. Here are some pictures-

I took this picture to show you how much gear is involved in setting out a spread-

We saw a huge flock of snows, many distant flocks of canada geese, and two speckelbelly geese. I always enjoy being outdoors, even in the mud and the cold.

So the goose season didnt end on the high note we were hoping for. But it was a great year for learning, and I am all ready looking forward to next season.

Those pictures may be your reason to be excited about next year....they depict the reason I gave up on waterfowl some time ago.....way too much work for too little action......around here the ducks and geese frequent mainly the private clubs that are either closed or way too expensive.....the MDC areas are still an option but not a very good one.....
Glad you are enjoying and I'm sure it's good to share your time with Mike....

Tomkat,

A couple of weeks ago, I took out a couple of younguns  "mid20's"  on their first Canada Goose hunt..Although we only got a goose or two, the smiles on their faces were similar to your big ole grin.. Some days, the work is hard and the return is small, other days it is the opposite....I just love being outdoors!!!

Welcome to waterfowling BIG TIME!!!

I took the guys to Columbia Bottoms, you know the "Non waterfowl Killing" place.  they had another terrible year on birds this year, at least after Dove season...  We have no layouts so we set our dekes in family groups of 5-8 with only one sentry per family... about 8 am, we were standing in a tree line which keeps  the big birds a tad higher than I like, but they worked us twice, came in range and i turned the guys loose. I probably should have held them back for a landing, feet down, shot, rather than a passing shot at 30 yards, but they were itchy and I wanted them to shoot.  I did not want another " we should have shot" missed opportunity, this way, if they did hit a bird it is their fault not me for holding the shot...
