I used to work with a guy that went out West every year for a DIY, public ground hunt.  Some years he went to Colorado for elk, others he went to Wyoming (I think) for pronghorn.  IIRC, they could only get doe pronghorn tags when they did those hunts, but he really seemed to enjoy them.

Good to see you around, Chad!  smile

Do It Yourself, TK.

Chad, just do your homework and research, lots of it.  I'd sugget antelope for a first hunt.  The weather is usually mild, game is plentiful and your chance of success much higher.  If elk is your lust you'd be better off to ingratiate yourself with a group of guys who have been doing it a while.  Elk aren't just bigger deer and unless you've spent some time in the mountains at the elevations elk are found you can get yourself in big trouble quick....especially if the weather takes a turn for the worse on you.  The Rocky Mountain state units are full of stories of guys who "knew what they were doing" and had to be rescued.  If you have to be rescued you're the only thing that comes out.  Rifles, tents, gear.....everything stays where it is.  I saw it happen all too frequently when we lived in NW Wyoming.

Mule deer can be had fairly easily depending on which state you choose.

Bear is usually a tough DIY hunt.  You might stumble on to one but the odds aren't with you.

The rest, goats, sheep and moose, you better hire a guide.  If you've never hunted the mountains you have neither the experience, knowledge or equipment to handle such a hunt.  That isn't a slam, I lived there for 3 years and I don't have it either.

IMO you can't beat antelope for a first DIY hunt. In the right spots of WY there's lots of public ground and lots of antelope. Antelope are out all day long so you can kick back and sleep in if your so inclined or you can hit it hard. You can plop you butt down on a stand and glass, walk and glass  or spot (glass) and stalk. IMO spot and stalk is the most productive.

In WY the success rates are usually in the 90% range on antelope. You can draw a buck and in some areas  you can get 2 doe tags too.

anyone here hunted idaho? i was doing some research(actually the wife was) she is trying to get me out of the house.... they have a draw system just like most states but i also noticed you CAN obtain a elk and general deer tag(tag good for one mule deer buck OR one white tailed buck) at the same time and there is also 2 weeks where the season overlap anyone have any advice on that?
