Drylok,

Looks like you married my wifes sister.  My wife thinks camping is Holiday Inn...but she does love to fish...

Hello All,
I intend to leave here around 10 or 11 in the morning. I'm trying to figure out what time to leave here to avoid both the noon rush hour and the 5 o'clock rush hour around St. Louis.

Unfortunately, Mrs. DL will not be coming with me as she has church obligations over the weekend plus she's a bit of an (indoor girl) so camping in 90 + degree heat is not exactly her cup of tea.

However, I would like to introduce her to the folks here at MHS. I'll just let her post an introduction and leave a few comments....

Wow! You people are dedicated to ducks and guns to lay out in the heat and humidity all weekend!!! Ewwww! There are bugs out there too! Watch out! They are blood-suckers and you can't shoot them you know! Sorry I can't attend...I only camp out at the Hilton! Have fun and take care of DL! He's not too bad of a guy and I might miss him a little... kiss
Mrs. DL,

Mrs. DL.........you can rest assured we will take very good care of your honey!  I am pretty hard on the boys around here to mind their maners, although one or two give me fits every now and then they all generally behave quite well! ! !   wave

As my husband, MOHunter said......you should sign up and get your own user name.  We talk about more than just huntin' and killin'! ! ! thumbsup

Enjoy your weekend and we'll send Mr. DL home to you on Sunday........I bet he'll miss you a little bit also! ! ! whistle sunny wave

MO,
I'm about a short 3 hrs from St. Louis. Remember I'm only 18 miles from the Indiana line. So if I leave here at 11 I'll be at your place around 4-5 depending on how long the ammunition stop takes.

Sounds good.  Just an FYI, the Wal Mart here that is close to us had plenty of 12GA. shells when we were there last night.  They had the 100 round cases in Winchester, Federal, and Remington, and we will be going right past there when we go out for supper, so if you want to wait until tomorrow evening to pick up shotgun ammo, that would be fine.  While we were in town last night, I also checked for handgun ammo and came up with a big blank.  Not a lick of 9mm or .45 ACP to be had anywhere.

i ran into the same problem in my search for some 9mm ammo. mad  i  did manage to get some shells and i will probably pick up another brick of shells friday night or early saturday morning. i will try to stop bass pro on lunch tomorrow to see if i can find some target ammo for the 9mm, but i ain't gonna hold my breath. i'm still bringin the mosin nagant and plenty of ammo so that i can shoot and make sure the sights are true before i take it to the cmp shoot in july. i read that you were gonna rope of the target range at 40 yards which will work fine for no more than what i need to do, but if there is a chance i could get in a couple of long shots that would be awesome. i might bring water instead of soda due to the fact that there is still a heat advisory until saturday night. i guess at least 4-5 bags of chips would be sufficient i'm assuming. if you all could give me a close to final head count tomorrow that would be great. will anyone else be bringin any bows or any archery targets? i have a bag target, but it is disrepair and won't sit by itself and there is a possibilty of an arrow goin through it, if we don't have a backstop of some sort. i also noticed that SKduckhunt offered to swap me 20ga. for 12ga., which i'm in favor of as long as you want all 100 shells.

Darn it, I'm disapointed in that ammo report. I'm on a mission to find 100 rounds of 9mm for a buddy. Sheesh is the ammo cycle ever going to get back to normal?  cookoo

I'd say showing up around 8:00 should be fine.  I can't imagine folks would want to sleep in too much when there's guns that need shootin'.

Heck, I'm usually awake by 6 or so. Show up whenever you like, you can always take a walk around until people start getting motivated.

Bubba - Water instead of soda would be just fine with me.  Water will help keep folks hydrated better anyway, which will be important as hot as it's going to be.

We've got a rough head count of 20 - 30 people.  Unfortunately, that's about as well as I can narrow it down.  4 or 5 bags of chips should be plenty, I would think.

Yes, you can get here as early as you'd like on Saturday.  I suspect we'll be up anytime after 6:00 -7:00.  Looking forward to seeing you again!

Vic - I am looking forward to seeing you again!  You go on ahead and bring some of your homegrown "boolits" and handloads and give em' a whirl.  We're planning on blasting some clay birds if you want to bring one of your ML shotguns along. big grin

Just made a trip to Cabelas for some 9mm, 38 spec and 20 gague ammo ... no problem but I was also intendiing to buy a box of 25-20 WCF for my Winchester 1892 ... didn't happen ... they had two boxes but with tax they would have been over $60 a box and that is just rediculous ..... SEE YOU ALL TOMORROW

Welp, we've been home...ummmm....about an hour give or take and the Jeep is put back together, all the rifles and pistols are wiped down, cleaned and in their respective places in the gun safe.

We both had a great time.  Probably along with everyone else we wish it had been about 15 egrees cooler but ain't nuthin' any of us can do about the weather.  Chris, Christine and everyone else who had a hand in making all the preparations, and we know there were many, thank you for that and your hospitality.  There is a lot of "behind the scenes work" that goes into hosting such an event.

I'm really sorry the Sharps didn't shoot any more accurately.  That rife really is accurate.  About 15 years ago there was 4 or 5 of us guys who shot BPC sitting around talking about how black powder cartridge loads seemed to lose their accuracy if they sat on the shelf for more than a couple months.  The rounds we fired today were loaded last fall for an event that never took place so they were at least 8 months old.  I pondered that all the way home and just couldn't come up with a plausible answer.  Welp, when I started cleaning the Sharps I think I may have come up with a reason.  Black powder needs a moist lube even when fired in muzzleloaders, due to the fouling.  I believe the soft, moist bullet lube we use on BP bullets dries out over a not very long period of time, depending on the environment.  A winters worth of heating the house and however long the air conditioning has been on....well...seems to me it's possible that lube could certainly lose some of its lubricity.  Trust me, if there is no lube to soften the powder fouling as the bullet is travelling down the bore accuracy goes out the window.  With smokeless powder and shooting cast bullets you're looking for a lube to prevent leading.  With BP you're looking for a lube to soften the fouling.  I don't if I'm right but it is the only thing I can discern that could possibly change over time.

I pondered how that could have been overcome in "the old days" and I may even have the answer to that.  They much preferred sperm whale oil for lube for factory loaded ammo and I don't believe it has the same evaporation properties as the lubes we use today.  That, and on the buffalo and target ranges the cartridges were generally loaded the night before or the day of the shooting.  Ain't much gonna happen in 24 hours.

Anyway, that's my synopsis.  I didn't mean to take off on such a tangent but after all I've posted about that rifle and for it to shoot like a shotgun I was, and still am, more than a bit embarrassed.  I even tried it here at the house after I got home and it shot the same.....not very darn good!!!!

Again, we had a great time, look forward to reading everyones posts and seeing some really neat pics.
